Only once I read a book that contained more than 1,000 pages. It was when I read one of my absolute favorite books, which is called Shantaram. Translated into German the book has 1,088 pages. I read this book while traveling to the Caribbean and afterwards Namibia. It took me months to finish it, since I didn’t have time to read every day.

The story takes place in India, where an Australian man decides to live his life after having been in prison for years. Without having any money or knowing anyone in India he starts his new life in the slum of Bombay. He learns some of the many languages spoken in India and becomes a “Shantaram” – The Man of Peace.

What I love about this book is that it’s just so well written and the story is something no one would ever believe could happen. Even though it has so many pages, it keeps being exciting!

If you’re traveling for a longer period of time (more than a month) then I really recommend this book. You don’t have to be traveling to India to feel like you can relate to the story. It’s all about traveling to a new world and different culture than what you’re used to. And I guess that’s what you will experience as well traveling to almost any place that seems to be far away from home.

This fall I hope I get to travel to India and hopefully see some of the places Gregory David Roberts mentions in the book!

Has anyone read the book? Let me know! xx
