So, once again I feel like it’s getting just a bit too cold in Copenhagen. We still haven’t had any snow this winter, but having a cold for two months is not really helping me much these days. I have finally booked everything for January and February and I am just so excited!
This winter I’ll go South once again to seek summer, sun and d-vitamins.
And since it’s not the entire world that see January as being a cold month, I just as well escape freezing Denmark and enjoy the summer somewhere else. January is super cheap, so here’s a list of where you should go traveling in January 2017:
It’s cheap, it’s beautiful, it’s accessible and there’s a lot of things to do. And it’s still fairly safe to travel to Morocco. Even you’re traveling alone as a girl you should be completely fine.
Marrakesh. The medina. Go shopping at the market, where the bags are cheap, the monkeys and snakes are dancing and the old ladies give you henna tattoos for a discount.
In case you’re tired of the big city life, go visit Taghazout to become a pro in surfing.
Travel by air. From Europe there are lots of direct flights to Agadir or Marrakesh. Norwegian offers lots of direct flights for less than 200 USD. Once you’re there you should stay in a riad. The riads have small pools and usually not too many rooms. It’s almost like a private house that you rent really cheap.
In Morocco you can also go trekking in the Atlas mountains, ride a camel through the dessert and do hamman (public steam bath). Renting a car and just traveling through the country, making sure the car have the right maintenance and good Tires for travel and having small stops in each city gives you a more complete idea of the Moroccan culture and history.
Flight tickets are cheaper in January. It’s less crowded in January and you get to experience real summer during January month.
Kruger National Park. Surfing and shark diving in Cape Town. Relax in an African style lodge with a view over the African nature.
Fly to Johannesburg. Make sure you get someone to pick you up and go directly on a safari tour. After the safari continue by air to Cape Town. In Cape Town Uber is very common, which makes it super easy to get around.
After the diving, surfing and safari tour explore the history of Cape Town. Wander through the streets and see how the city has developed over the years.
United Arab Emirates
Europe (and most other countries) are cold in January. In UAE you will definitely be able to sweat. And besides, the country is developing so fast that each year you visit UAE it will never be the same as before.
Dubai Mall, Burj Al Arab, Burj Khalifa, Emirates Palace. Get real gold on your cappuccino, visit the tallest building of the world and take a picture in front of the world’s only 7-star hotel.
Fly to either Dubai or Abu Dhabi. It doesn’t make the biggest difference. Stay in the type of accommodation that you have always dreamed of. Just to pretend to be one of “them”.
When you get tired of the superficial world have a visit at Ferrari World. After that there’s a wildlife center in Abu Dhabi with lots of animals and be confirmed that it’s not all people in UAE who care about living in a fake wonderland.
Fidel Castro just died. All travel agencies and airlines sell trips to Cuba for no money. Go before everyone goes on holidays.
Smoke a cigar. Drive an old car. Go for a dive. Enjoy a cuba libre.
If a travel agency is offering a cheap trip to Cuba – go for it. If an airline does the same – go for it. Take the offer!
Meet the locals. And the travelers. Discuss the future. And the past. Don’t be affected by the amount of tourists. Get recommendations from the locals.
